Muscle Activation Techniques

A DIFFERENT
APPROACH
TO A
PERSISTENT
PROBLEM.

MAT is a hands-on neuromuscular assessment and treatment process that identifies and corrects muscle inhibition — the underlying dysfunction that contributes to pain, tightness, and movement limitation. It works alongside other forms of care, addressing something specifically different.

What MAT Is

"MAT addresses neuromuscular inhibition — a specific underlying cause that contributes to pain and dysfunction."

MAT works from a foundational principle: wherever you see persistent pain or limitation in range of motion, one or more muscles involved in that movement may be inhibited — not functioning the way they should. By systematically identifying and correcting those inhibited muscles, MAT helps restore proper movement and reduce compensatory patterns that create discomfort over time.

MAT is not a replacement for physiotherapy, chiropractic, or massage therapy — it's a complement to them. Many clients work with excellent practitioners in those fields and find that MAT addresses something additionally. It's a specialized approach designed for complex or persistent cases where other interventions have helped but not fully resolved the issue.

Who It's For
Persistent or Complex Pain
Chronic conditions that have been partially addressed but not fully resolved — MAT looks at what may have been missed.
Athletes — Recurring Issues
Recurring injury or performance plateau despite good training. MAT examines the neuromuscular patterns that may be contributing.
Post-Surgical Rehabilitation
After surgery restores structure, MAT supports the restoration of muscle function and neuromuscular communication.
Performance Plateau
When training hard isn't producing results, inhibited muscles may be limiting output. MAT addresses the neuromuscular component.
Older Adults — Function & Independence
Quality of life and physical capability at any age. Active clients in their 80s with meaningful, lasting improvements.
Referrals from Other Practitioners
MAT works well as a complement to ongoing physiotherapy, chiropractic, or massage care — for cases that need a different lens.
What to ExpectA session, step by step
01
Assessment
A systematic range-of-motion evaluation to identify which muscles may be inhibited and where compensation patterns have developed. Specific and individualized to each person.
02
Treatment
Targeted, hands-on activation using palpation and specific positional techniques. Most clients notice changes within the session — improved range of motion, reduced tightness, or reduced discomfort.
03
Reassessment
Every treatment is followed by reassessment to confirm the change has held. The process is self-correcting — what works is kept, what needs adjustment is refined.
04
Progression
As muscle function is restored, sessions shift toward reinforcing strength and stability. Many clients transition into broader kinesiology and coaching work over time.

Common Questions
How many sessions will I need?
It depends on the complexity and duration of the issue. Most clients notice meaningful change within the first 3–4 sessions. Chronic or long-standing conditions typically take longer. You'll have a clearer picture after the initial assessment and the complimentary call beforehand.
Is MAT covered by insurance?
A small number of extended health plans include kinesiology coverage — approximately 5% of clients have applicable coverage. Check with your provider. Receipts are issued for all sessions.
Can MAT work alongside my existing physiotherapy or chiropractic care?
Yes — and it often works best that way. MAT addresses neuromuscular inhibition specifically, which is a complement to the structural and soft tissue work done in physiotherapy, chiropractic, and massage. Many clients continue their existing care while adding MAT for persistent issues that haven't fully resolved.
What should I wear?
Comfortable athletic wear that allows access to arms, legs, and hips. Bring a clear description of what you've been dealing with — the more context you can provide, the more targeted the assessment.

"I was having trouble with my lower back and tried yoga, chiropractor and massage. Finally my RMT suggested I see Matt. After the first treatment I knew something had been radically improved. After only a second treatment, I am back to full function."
